Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a common condition affecting millions worldwide. It occurs when the eyes fail to produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly, resulting in discomfort, visual disturbances, and potential damage to the ocular surface. Despite being widespread, many individuals underestimate its impact on daily life.

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

The causes of Dry Eye Syndrome are multifactorial. Aging is a significant factor, as tear production naturally decreases over time. Hormonal changes, particularly in women during menopause, can exacerbate the condition. Environmental factors such as wind, smoke, dry climates, and prolonged screen use also contribute to tear evaporation. Additionally, certain medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, and some antidepressants, can reduce tear production. Underlying health conditions like diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and eyelid problems further increase susceptibility.
